Highlights
Rouen, the capital of Normandy, is a charming city with a rich history. Cobbled streets and timbered medieval buildings make the pedestrianised old town a joy to explore. It has Gothic churches such as Saint-Maclou and Saint Ouen; and the skyline is dominated by the spires of the Cathedrale Notre-Dame - much painted by Impressionist Claude Monet.
During your tour you will have free time to discover Rouen for yourself. Visit the Cathedral, learn about the famous heroine at Historial Jeanne D'Arc, see great works of art at the Musee Des Beaux-Arts - the city is your oyster! We will stay for two nights at the Ibis Rouen Rive Gauche Hotel, comfortable and conveniently located, it is a 15 minute walk over the River Seine into the heart of old Rouen. Our trip coincides with the magical Cathedral Light Show, a free event which takes place when night falls.
On Sunday we will leave Rouen drive through the French countryside to Giverny. Monet moved to Giverny in 1883 with his family, including his second wife and 8 children, living and painting here until his death in 1926. The village surroundings and the gardens of his house formed a great part of the inspiration and subject matter for his paintings. It was after the move to Giverny that Monet began his famous Séries of paintings, repeatedly rendering haystacks, cathedrals and waterlilies from his garden pond in his own unique Impressionist style. We will visit Monet’s house and gardens, where you can see the famous waterlilly pond and bridge for yourself! Your ticket is included in the cost of the tour.
After checking out of the hotel on Monday you will again have free time to explore Rouen, before we head back to Calais for the ferry home to the UK.
