2017 Dates

Sun 30th July

Often overlooked by tourists, the vibrant and exciting city of Lille is a rising star. It’s vast suburbs are an industrial metropolis, but the old town centre, known as Vieux-Lille, is a stunning jewel of grand Flemish architecture, with renouned art museums, cobbled streets and leafy parks just waiting to be explored.

At the heart of Vieux-Lille is its beautiful Grand Place, once the medieval market place. You will be dropped off and picked up a few minutes walk from this popular gathering place. Its decorative brick houses, ornate Vieille Bourse and pavement brasseries around the fountain of the Déesse – the goddess said to have saved the town when it was besieged by Austria in 1792 – are elegant and picturesque. At one end the Grand Garde, now the Théâtre du Nord, once housed the royal guardsmen and bears the sun motif of Louis XIV. Behind the Vieille Bourse, on place du Théâtre, you’ll find Lille’s belle époque opera house, the neo-vernacular Chambre de Commerce and the Rang de Beauregard, an elegant terrace of tall decorative houses.

A short walk from here you’ll find Lille’s 17th century star-shaped Citadelle. Outside it’s 2.2km long ramparts is the city’s largest park, home to a small zoo and amusement park.

For a taste of authentic Lille, you could travel further afield to the ethnically mixed, family-friendly quartier populaire (working-class quarter) of Wazemmes. Here you can find the huge Marché de Wazemmes, Lille's favourite food market. The adjacent outdoor market is the place to be on Sunday morning – it's a riot of colour, sights and sounds!

We will make this day trip to remember easy for you, picking you up in central London and traveling by comfortable coach via the channel tunnel to the heart of lovely Lille.
