Highlights
The vibrant and exciting city of Lille is a rising star. The old town centre, known as Vieux-Lille, is a stunning jewel of grand Flemish architecture, with renouned art museums, cobbled streets and leafy parks just waiting to be explored.
At the heart of Vieux-Lille is its beautiful Grand Place, once the medieval market place. You will be dropped off and picked up a few minutes walk from this popular gathering place. Its decorative brick houses, ornate Vieille Bourse and pavement brasseries around the fountain of the Déesse – the goddess said to have saved the town when it was besieged by Austria in 1792 – are elegant and picturesque. A short walk from here you’ll find Lille’s 17th century star-shaped Citadelle. Outside it’s 2.2km long ramparts is the city’s largest park, home to a small zoo and amusement park.
With Christmas approaching, Lille is decked out in lights and colour. Around the Christmas market, the whole town is covered in a huge crown of garlands.
On Place Rihour, 80 wooden chalets teem with gift ideas, nativity figurines, Christmas decorations and festive food. You can find regional specialities here, and you can also find arts and crafts from Russia, Canada and Poland! And that's not to forget the gingerbread and other delicacies, which you can take away or eat on the spot with a glass of mulled wine...
