Highlights
The blockbuster movie Dunkirk has highlighted on of the most important and dramatic moments of World War II, the evacuation of Allied troops from the French coast. On this tour you can visit the secret WWII tunnels underneath Dover Castle where the headquarters of the Dunkirk evacuations - ‘Operation Dynamo’ - was based.
We’ll head from Central London straight to the seafront at Dover, where we’ll stop briefly to give you a view of the iconic White Cliffs as well as the ferries on route to France. Here you’ll have your first sighting of the castle sitting majestically on top of the cliffs overlooking the town.
We’ll drive to the top of the hill and sort out your tickets, and then you’ll have plenty of free time to explore all that Dover Castle has to offer, from the medieval Great Tower to the Secret War Tunnels and even the remains of a Roman Lighthouse!
Later we’ll collect you from outside the Castle gate and take a short drive over to the scenic city of Canterbury, home to Britain’s oldest cathedral. Your tour guide will walk you to the cathedral gates, so you may visit if you wish. There are a host of interesting things to see in the city. The ancient ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church form Canterbury's UNESCO World Heritage Site while other ruins such as the castle are reminders of its history, heritage and culture.
Explore the city and enjoy the winding lanes and streets, all with their own unique identity and fabulous shops, cafes and restaurants. Alternatively you may wish to relax and absorb the wonder of the city with a boat trip or walk along the River Stour. You will be able to appreciate Canterbury's finest and historical architecture set against outstanding, scenic views. The crystal clear waters offer a home to ducks, swans, fish and other wildlife while the river banks have an array of bending willow trees and wild flowers.
At the end of your trip, our comfortable coach will deliver you safely back to Tower Hill.
