From the scenic seaside towns along the coastline to the wildness of Dartmoor, there is no disputing the beauty of Devon. On this wonderful weekend trip we will discover some of South Devon’s best bits.
On Saturday we’ll head to the picturesque and vibrant harbor town of Dartmouth. From the town jetty we will take a wonderful circular Paddle Steam Boat trip, the last remaining coal-fired paddle steamer in the UK! Viewing Bayards Cove, Kingswear and Dartmouth Castles, Britannia Royal Naval College, Dittisham Village, Sir Walter Raleigh's Boathouse, Greenway Quay and The Estate of the late Dame Agatha Christie.
After filling our lungs with fresh sea air we’ll head to our hotel for the evening. Positioned on the northern bank of the River Teign, the Passage House Hotel has an on-site 18th-century inn and beautiful views across the mouth of the estuary. Dinner is included in the cost of your trip!
After a hearty breakfast (also included in the cost) we’ll drive to our first stop of the day. Nestled in the shadow of Dartmoor, in a beautiful wooded valley beside the river Dart, Buckfast Abbey offers visitors a tranquil refuge from the hectic pace of everyday life. The Abbey is a working monastery where a community of Benedictine monks live self-sufficiently, welcoming visitors from all around the world. Enjoy the tranquility and beautiful gardens of this spiritual haven.
Next, we’ll stop at Buckfast’s Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary to see some colorful insects and adorable otters in action!
Then we will drive across the rugged and windswept scenery of Dartmoor to visit our final stop of the weekend. Morwellham Quay is an award-winning Cornish Mining World Heritage site, featuring historic port, copper mine, working Victorian farm, railway, heavy horses and museums of costume and mining. Bordering the beautiful River Tamar, amidst towering cliffs and gently rolling farmland, discover this lost world with the help of a Living History team.
For many, a highlight of the visit is the narrow-gauge Mine Railway. Travel by train along the banks of the River Tamar before venturing deep underground in the George & Charlotte copper mine. Here, in their real abandoned workplaces, displays illustrate the harsh working conditions of Victorian miners and our train drivers offer an expert commentary on the technical aspects of hard rock mining.
By way of contrast the Victorian farm and nature reserve offer you the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of 21st century life as you wonder through the tranquil countryside with only the wildlife for company.
